Please help me to understand and explain some phrases' meaning as I couldn't find it myself (Im a translator, not from web design world )

I need to translate some jokes from eng to ru. Here we go:

 

Q: Why is there so much white space?

A: No matter how perfectly I answer this question, I always lose this one. So, over the years I more carefully pick and chose my battles.

 

I hope I understand a humble meaning - white space is when your site is not overloaded with ads, fonts, coloured forms etc. Right? And "lose the battle" and "I carefully pick and choose my battle" - what does he mean?

 

And this:

 

Remember the golden rule of web design payments: Only release code after final payment is made.

What is "release code" - is it a process when a developer gives to a client some code to be able to launch a site, or?

Oops, having re-read my post now, i think the context might be unclear. Well, question about white space is a q from a clent to a web-designer, and the 2nd phrase is about those clients who are willing to pay in parts and "after we launch". hope someone can help me, guys. thank you in advance!

It means that sometimes it isn't worth spending time and energy trying to win an argument so it's better to focus on the most important issues and accept that not everything will be perfect. So you choose which things are worth fighting for (the "battles" that you choose to fight).

 

• I carefully pick and choose a battle = The person is careful to not get into an argument unless he feels he can win that argument

 

 

Ironically, I don't think it's worth my time debating this meaning
