What are your favourite frameworks?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

As part of my dissertation at University (and out of general interest too) I'm doing some research into the most popular contemporary frameworks (server side and client side).. so, what's your favourite framework?

Do you have any "go-to" frameworks? Also, would you pick one framework over another depending on the type of project (for example, would you pick Laravel over CodeIgniter for a blog, but CodeIgniter over Laravel for a shop, etc)?

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to this discussion :)

Front End - Angular

As for a UI framework it has to be Inuit. Bootstrap, Foundation etc are not frameworks in my opinion they are products, they make a huge amount of design decisions for you, unless hacked to death you can always spot a Bootstrap site. That's not to say it's bad but it's intended market is those who are building systems who don't wanna write css, they just want to be able to rapidly mock up a UI that just works.

Inuit on the other hand makes no design decisions, it's an architecture with a collection of objects that are designed to be extended. No two sites built on inuit look the same. I have built my own framework and it's heavily based on inuit, I've just added a collection of my own objects on top of inuit + a collection of javascript modules and removed a small amount that I didn't deem to be necessary for my projects.

Again a framework is supposed to be extended, Bootstrap and Foundation etc if you find yourself undoing a lot of styles then they probably were not the best choice.

As for something more backend-y I've heard some great things about Meteor.js that sits on top of Node.js, but I've never actually used it. I do know quite a few highly skilled backend programmers who intend to move their projects from Apache/php to a Node based system, significantly faster if written properly to fully maximise the none blocking aspect of Node.

WordPress is not a framework. Its a CMS.

Even though I'm not good at it yet, mine is angular.
