apologies in advance for the messy code!

I am trying to create a left sided navigation which has lots of information which needs to be managed.

 

I can link ajax to call for an external html file, but I can only call for 1 html file to appear at present. The bit that I am stuck now on is how to call for different html files independently from <a href links> in the left navigation menu and to appear in that single <div>.

 

I would like to be able to have each <a href> link on the left navigation call a different html file which appears in a common <div>

I guess there is a workaround of having a separate page for each link then linking to it's own html file for ajax but this would be pointless, not elegant, and ugly!
