I always have tremendous problems with validating while using Javascript (following tutorials, not hand made stuff). Is there a way round it so it doesn't attempt to validate JS?

Put the JavaScript in a .js file (removing any <script> tags from around it), link it with:

<script src="the-javascript.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
