jquery cycle and how to extend

I am working with this

And what i'm trying to achieve is to have a

slideshow with bigger thumbnails that run on top or below (or even on the side) of the content.

The content should be clickable (lightbox) and should run in a filmstrip (carousel?).

More so, i would like to add the function of mousewheel - so to be able to scroll through the images as well as click on them to go there.

I'm struggling because i don't want to deconstruct the whole site and build a whole new gallery but would like to implement the above in the existing design.

Any thoughts?
