My First Steps!

Featured Replies

Thanks for a good link ErisDS.

I have just taken my first steps and have actually managed to put something together. So far I am concentrating on HTML but to be honest the tutorial on w3schools is getting a bit technical.

at the moment I am trying to insert an image.

What file extentions must they be?

How do I specify the path to a different location on my pc where the image can be found?

Images are added to HTML with the following code:

<img src="path/to/the/image.jpg" width="250" height="500" alt="Some text about the image>

You can use most common image types, but the best supported are JPEG (.jpg/.jpeg), GIF (.gif) and PNG (.png).

To specify a path that isn't in the current folder, you can either use a URL (eg, http://www.mydomain.com/images/theimage.jpg), or you put in the relative path to the image, which is relative to the folder of the HTML document.

It would probably be easier for you to put the images in the same folder that the HTML file is in, at least until you get more confident with directory structures on websites and servers.

Thanks. ;)

I created a folder inside the folder where my html file is and was trying to get to those images but couldnt. When I transfer them to the mother folder they work fine.

So what images can I and can I not borrow? Is there a database of free images you can use?

If you want to grab images out of a folder which is in the same place as the HTML file, you'd do something like this.

<img src="nameoffolder/imagename.jpg" height="500" width="200" alt="Random text">

As for free images, you could try somewhere like SXC.

If you make your own images like on photoshop I would suggest saving them as .PNG. If you are gonna put some photos on your website make sure they are .JPG. JPG has better quality while PNG images are faster to load. Just a tip I wanted to share :p
