I have just bought dreamweaver CS3 and a training DVD. I am combining Photoshop CS3 and Dreamweaver CS3. I have made my page in photoshop then transfered it to dreamweaver, made up a template, with an 'Editable region' for text and images. I have inserted text and positioned. My problem is, when I draw an AP Div box and try drag and drop an image into it, it won't have it? Is this because I have a table there from my photoshop page? hence it works when it's a blank dreamweaver doc. page.

 

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

 

I thought the training DVD would help me with everything but it left me hanging, when it comes to adding images to go alongside text.

Div positioning is quite a complex area - and although you can use the AP div tags to draw out on page and add content to - its not really the best way to do it for a couple of reasons.

 

1. You can't rely on positioning the AP div elements properly on the page. When they display quite often some of the results are unexpected. I know because I started off like this. Also, if your DIv tag information is placed in the 'head' of your page - it ads weight which is not good for the page - or for your search engine rankings.

 

2. You have to make sure that if you are going to do it this way - that you go into 'file' 'preferences' and then 'ap elements' and check the 'nesting box' that appears. This way you can nest layers inside each other that helps with your positioning.

 

The best way to do it would be to create a style sheet.css file to hold all your div information to lay out your page.

 

The best thing you can do is to use one of the dreamweaver CS3 pre-built templates for a page design. This will allow you to experiment and thus learn about laying out your page. That way - you can slice up your photoshop design and place it in the relevant areas of the page.

 

Its very hard to cover it in more detail than that - but if you want to include your design in this post - ill have a look and advise you about the best way to go about it.

Hi thanks for the advise. All I did was to slice up in photoshop then 'save for web', images & html, then open the htm file in dreamweaver and delete main text area, make a template up as I was shown, with an editable region, where my text went in. then add my image in the form of a 'AP div tag'. The training DVD showed me to do it this way (except the AP div tag) or the way you have mentioned, being, open a page layout then add my images. I found this quite complicated as it didn't have enough rows for what I was doing. I have added a 'print screen' of my page

I have been playing around and have added a 'Div tag' not an 'AP' and draged the image in. Is this still not a good option? I positioned it 'centre' but it was too low in the page. I have added new image.

I am new on this forum. I used show and hide behaviour with ap div in adobe cs3 dreamweaver to enlarge images when the mouse moves over thumbnail image. The Firefox browser displays behaviour almost perfect, however, IE does not. All the large version pictures are displayed on a blank white page on top of the web page. I have done this on three web pages namely, index, about Us and another page. Strangely enough only the images on the index page do not display in the proper locations.

 

I like the idea using style sheet.css to contain the location of these images to appear in the right location. Can you show me how to do that?

I just joined this forum to find out more about these new APDiv's

 

whats wrong with them ?

 

why don't more people use them or even know of them ?

 

I have made this follwing page using nothing but apdiv's and so far I cannot figure out why people just don't use them all the time !

 

it was so easy, no padding to worry about, no css (which may be a bad thing I guess, but not having to create one was fun)

 

besides, css is still new to me, as is html, but if we can use wysiwyg "apdiv"s, then why not use them ?

 

and I know, its not always wysiwyg, but please explain why...

 

I find the page works in both browsers (IE and FF)

there is this annoying "forced to the right" thing going on though..

 

I thought I had created the page with the main apdiv in the centre of the page..

 

 

(the background image was 1280 by 1510)

 

and the centre white image which lies behind the main page elements and divs, is 884 px across and the main apdivs are 876 with images that wide placed inside them.. puposely leaving some white peaking out from behind the divs to create the "border edge"

 

so.. the white background image begins at 198.. (1280-884=396 / 2 = 198)

I still don't see many issues with using them...
