I'm having problems with the right column of my site (as discussed previously on this forum). I'd like to just get rid of the right column and have the other column occupy the entire area. How can I do this?

Guessing that the sidebar is the right hand column, you can delete the section of code...

Then you need to update your css, the part which restricts main which I am guessing is the column you want to occupy the whole area, you will need to increase the width, you could also remove the float as it doesn't really need to be there if it is just one column.
