February 29, 200818 yr I've been lamenting the demise of my powerbook g4 of late. It was one of the first ones apple made and came with OS X 1.0! Although I had managed to upgrade to panther before it died. The thing is, the logic board is dead, and when I spoke to my local mac repair centre they told me that to replace it would cost more than a new macbook. So what I am thinking is: is it possible to use the casing & screen and just put new guts into it, effectively making a pc? If I am being a moron by suggesting this, please be gentle...
February 29, 200818 yr just buy a new machine! You could get something with a faster processor, more ram ... it just doesn't make sense to try and repair/convert it... Of course, if you want to try, you will need to get a micro-atx motherboard, a low power processor (a celeron), and a really good cooling system, which would probably need lots of low-profile fans.
February 29, 200818 yr Author just buy a new machine! I know! I'm a pain in the arse! There's just something I can't stand about throwing away something when only part of it is broken. If I can make it work again, it will make me much happier than buying a new one. Try to think of it as anticapitalist-tech! Thanks for the tip though Anyone else?
February 29, 200818 yr It can't be a G4 if it came with OSX can it? Must be a G3? But anyway, I'd have to agree with penguin here
March 3, 200818 yr I had a board go on my G5 - local Mac firm (useless btw) - I'm from Bath so might be the same - quoted rediculous amount - in the end got the board for loads less from US company advertising on Ebay.
