Ive just written a blog post about Google's 'Instant Preview' What do you all think about it?

 

I think it will impact on us as designers, in so far placing more importance on a sites visual appearance. How many times have you gone to a site because it ranks highly and includes your keywords, only to find once inside the design is awful and deterring?....

I have also written a post on our Web Design Blog of my initial thoughts on it. We also assist clients with SEO so this change has various impacts.

 

My current thought is for people and agencies not to freak out. As far as I can tell it is still only for logged-in Google users AND have chosen to turn on the feature.

 

 

However, I feel you are right that the appearance of client's websites (and our own) will be key going forward. BUT the opposite of your statement is also true. A really beautiful website may still not be the search answer you really wanted.

 

So as we emphasise - the content and design must compliment each other - but don't allow sites to go live until you're happy with anyone previewing your site. Don't give a user an excuse NOT to click whether it's design or optimised content.

if it stops people designing sites crammed with keywords in every spare space it will be a great feature

 

i certainly did not turn this feature on.. one day it was just there.. still not sure if i like it or not

Sustainable SEO does not involve keyword spamming, that I can be sure. You should have had a right to turn it on (it was disabled by default on my account). And you can turn it off (same with Google Instant).

Moxby - 'The content and design must compliment each other' - good call. I think it emphasises the need for a website to be a complete package on the whole - rich, interesting content, effective SEO wise and visually appealing.

I doubt the majority of users will even notice the added magnifying glass icon, to be totally honest. Not for a while at least.
