August 12, 201016 yr I tend not to slice anymore... or at least use the slice tool. Back in the days of using tables for layouts slicing a design was a good way to quickly export all the images you need, but you still ended up with excess images that you didn't need. These days I tend to code my structure using XHTML and CSS first, and then extract my images from my layout in Photoshop as and when I need them. I just use the rectangular marquee tool for this and draw out a selection. Then if you press shift + apple (windows key if your on windows) + c, you can copy what you want and save it out.

August 12, 201016 yr Author So...Would it be recommended to start doing the layout in CSS after you have a PSD file? and just save each when required? Also what format is best? or would this depend on the effect for example a PNG to show transparency if you have an image behind or a colour you wanted to show under?

I'd design the layout in PS, then slice each element up when it's needed whilst building the page... Isn't that what everyone does? The format totally depends on the element. You obviously need the lowest file size without sacrificing the quality.
