i have the logo at a absolute position as the continuation (white strip) is part of the BG image.

 

seems to work fine in everything except for IE8, any ideas how i can fix this please?

There's a space being caused by the character height of the period "." in .clearfix:after so add line-height and font-size :-

.clearfix:after {content: "."; height: 0px; visibility: hidden; display: block; 
clear: both; line-height: 0; font-size: 0; }
