I have been taught at work to do mailers in a table-based layout, which is all well and good and suspect this is the best way of doing things.

 

What I'm not so sure on is that I also got taught to use 'image spacers' basically a 1px x 1px transparent gif which you can basically extend and use to space out elements so that all browsers show the email as consistently as possible. This makes sense, however, before 'show images' is selected it looks even more of a mess than usual due to all the weird extended 1px images showing everywhere which a red cross, sometimes with a bright red border around it.

 

Can anyone confirm whether these image spacers are actually necessary, or is there a better safe way of doing things? I do not know much about table based layouts and strangely cannot find much info on the net about it.

Why don't you create a table with 1 row and 3 columns at 100% width. Once the table is displayed, change the middle column to a fixed width of say 600 pixels.

 

The middle column will be 600 pixels wide, and the left and right column will remain percentage based so they will stretch out to fit the screen. Then your email will remain central.

 

You can just add you content to the middle column then. Less messy than using the spacers.
