Hey,

I have a spare pc and am wondering what is the best disto of linux? It is currently running windows server 2008 but I need a platform for linux development etc.

I have only ever used Ubuntu linux before. I have heard people say kubuntu is the best is that true?

oh and also what would the best server distro be?

I don't think there is a best distribution of linux, but there's probably some more suited to your needs and preferences than others. If it's your first time with linux, then I recommend Ubuntu (not kubuntu). It's definitely the easiest to get to grips with for noobies in my opinion. When you're comfortable with ubuntu, try the server edition, or maybe have a look at debian or fedora servers.

 

Once you start playing around with them, you'll get a feel for which flavours you like.

thanks oh and does anybody know how to instal centOS rather than just using live cd? (friend asked me)

The KDE desktop is atrocious. It's bloated, slow and damn right ugly!

I'm a relatively seasoned hand, yet I STILL use Ubuntu. Cos I like it. The latest version is swish, snazzy and uber-quick!

 

As to server software, either Ubuntu, CentOS or Fedora (Not to my taste, but certainly capable)

Now all we've gotta do is convince you that it should be your primary pc, NOT secondary. (Although Linux should convince you of that all by itself!)

No doubt that the best distribution is linux ubuntu. Specially for new linux users

Ubuntu 10.10 is loverly, I have a second box in my workshop room which has ubuntu on, don't use it for much more than getting drivers etc. for the PC's I am working on in the workshop room but I do love the change and feel from Windows every so often

First and foremost just because YOU think KDE is ugly doesn't mean the OP will besides you can always change the theme and such so its not a reason to not use it. Second I'm on 1GB of ram and KDE runs fine. Also at present Kubuntu 11.04 is actually pretty stable and decent. So while most of the prior versions of Kubuntu are crap in terms of Stability and performance 11.04 is pretty good.

 

Ubuntu 11.04 on the other hand...well lets just say Unity is not stable yet so I recommend avoiding Ubuntu 11.04.
