Doesn't it feel a bit like cheating? I've just done a mock up for my new portfolio site which uses a brush (licensed for commercial use) as the main background behind my name. I think it looks great, but I feel guilty for using it. What are people's thoughts on this?

Well, I have done the exact same thing, but I agree, it does feel a bit like cheating. I comfort myself with the thought that it's not only what you use, but the way you use it that counts...
