jquery fade in

Im looking to use jquery to fade in my page content but also to change the background colour.

I have a different background colour on each page with just a repeated gradient across the x axis. All of the tutorials ive looked at withthe fade in technique relate to fading in a specific <div>. This is ok for the content but not for the page background. Any ideas how to do it? Never used jquery before.
