getting my site onto the web

Featured Replies

Hi ive spent alot of time designing my first website.

At the moment it is all located on my desktop.

What is the process I have to go through to get it on the web?

Can someone list the process or post a link to a site which will show me.

Also, this website will occasionally need to be edited (text and files that can be downloaded from it)

Thanks!

Hi, im not sure why no body has replied to this?

anyway here are the basics:

choose a domain name you want to use, then buy it from somewhere like www.lcn.com

you then need to find a hosting company, this is what gives your space within the internet, lcn also offer hosting along with your domain name so maybe you can just do that.

once you have these 2 things in place your set, you can then upload your files to the server via whats called ftp software, you can use this to upload and download the files to your web space when you need to make changes etc.

Like chris said,

1) Head over to somewhere like GoDaddy to buy your domain name, and hosting package.

2) Download an ftp client (preferably free) like filezilla

3) You'll get an email from your new hosting company giving you login and ftp details, use these to upload your files.

Here's much the same advice, in a little more detail.

Generally I think it's better to have the hosting service with a different company from your domain name provider so that if you have a problem with the hosting service you can move it without some confusion with the domain name if both are tied up in the same contract, but that's detail.

Lot's of people buy domain names first and just keep them unused until they're ready to buy a hosting service.
