web Developer in safari

Featured Replies

Hi, in the web developer that comes with Safari 4, when you go to the show web inspector to analyse the css and html coding I always see the following categories in a sidebar window:-

Default CSS

Print CSS

Handheld CSS

Sorry, but for the life of me have no idea what these are, except that they are css of course that I do understand, why three versions?

In my Safari 4.03 I don't see the three types you mention:

The CSS categories you mention are 'media types'.

See 7.3 of http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2/media.html for a full list of media types and their uses.

Hi there, thankyou for that weblink. These things can be found when you go to the right column and click on the css style sheets, your window should then split at the bottom and you should get the follwing, image attached.

It's under the Resources tab at the top (i'm using chrome, but it's the same as safari).

They're just different stylesheets that load in certain circumstances.

When you visit the site from your pc, it loads Default css and uses the rules laid out in their. When you print a page, it doesn't print what you see on screen, but it prints the content as if it was styled by what's in the print css file (usually removes all images, corrects dimensions etc. for user convenience).

When you view the page on a handheld device (phone, archos, psp etc.) it only has a small screen, with a much lower resolution than your pc, so it loads the handheld css file which contains rules appropriate for smaller screens.

photontorpedo and bocaj, thanks for the clarification on the location. I don't use the Dev in Safari, I just tried it with google.com which is probably why I didn't see the media types. Sorry 'bout that.
