SQL Databases

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

as a rough guide, how much space on a sql database would various applications use?

i.e.

  • basic Joomla website
  • ecommerce site of 100 products?

i ask this because different hosts offer different capacities

I don't have an installed copy of Joomla to hand to answer the first one, but a bespoke e-commerce solution with over 1000 products (and 10 different price lists stacking up over 10k records; cart details at over 14k records) that I made for a work client is only using 2MB.

Another example... my 7 year old blog with over 18,000 comments and nearly 1,000 entries is only using about 10MB.

Most hosts offer multiple GB of database space. That's quite a lot :)

Well, it all depends on the content , depends on the database design also on the characteristics/nature of your product ..

For eg : One of clients has an Online Catalog which has 24 Categories , 1500 Products . The size of MySQL is around 600 KB.

Note the images are not stored in database it is stored as files .Image Average dimensions ( 500px × 800px ), the size of image folder ( image database ) is 220 MB.
