Hello all

 

I am a graphic designer but I have no experience in web design. A client contacted me to help him reestablish his website. He said that he needs a new home page and editing of the old one. So a basically a new identity of the whole web site He said that he has a programmer I can work with. I didn't want to say that I've never worked with web-design, but we all have to start somewhere

 

Please help!!! How I can present my idea to him I how I should deliver my design? If I design few pages in illustrator o in design and save it as pdf would the programmer know what to do with it?

 

Can you please describe how the collaboration usually work?

Remember that the way you perform in this project will define the outcome of what's going to happen in the future of your business, so you're going to need to make a good impression. Remember that you don't always need to accept a project, and if you don't have the necessary skill, there's no point charging someone for a design when you're not able to do it.

 

Designers generally use Photoshop for websites, so you'd need to send it to him in a .psd format.

 

Remember what I said. Don't be afraid to say no to a project. But if possible, always recommend another individual to them so you don't annoy them. Stick to what you know. Not what you don't know. Otherwise a year down the line he'll realise and never use you again.

 

Regarding the collaboration, the way it usually works for me is as follows (the other way around though, as I design and code).

 

1. Designer gets in touch with myself and asks me to convert his website from PSD format to XHTML/CSS.
2. He sends me all necessary files.
3. I split up the project files and convert them.
4. I usually send the files back to the designer, who handles the rest of the project (uploading etc).

I'm not a one-trick pony, so I usually do all of the designing and coding myself, so this rarely happens...

That's very wise and I agree. You don't have to say yes to every project but what you just starting up every project is precious. I don't even know how much to charge and if I should charge at all! I need it for my portfolio and as an experience.

 

I thought It would be easy.. design just few pages, but when all those details came up I am really stuck!

 

So the more advise you will give me the more it will help

I know it sounds me weird saying that about not accepting projects, but if you read any articles about freelancing you'll read it often. If you need some guidelines on what to charge, then get in touch with me. If you need any help at all, let me know, just press the little envelope icon beneath my name.

 

It's not as easy as it looks!! Graphic design is much more different to web design, because you need to know about a lot of standards that apply only to web design and you need to know how it all works. It's taken me six years to get where I am today, and I'm still not really that good.
