Idiot's guide to JavaScript

Featured Replies

Hey gang,

I can do HTML/CSS no problem. But JavaScript is quite literally a foreign language to me. My background is sales and marketing, rather than programming so don't necessarily have the right mindset to learn scripting languages. However, I have the right attitude and can put my mind to things so hopefully I can do this.

So the question is this: is there an idiot's guide to JavaScript (book or online)? Something that is explained in simple, plain English terms. Much of the stuff I've found to date is written with an assumed level of knowledge for the reader. The stuff I'm looking to do is hide and show things on forms, display content depending on browsers, etc. Nothing flash and rather than just copy someone's code I'd like to write my own or at least understand WTF I'm using.

All help gratefully received. :help:

TT: too true! A framework is there for creating code quickly.. and you need to understand all the logic stuff first before even attempting to condense your code.

The book I learnt JS from (apart from other scripts and general web tutorials) is JavaScript In Easy Steps

Once I understood how to create the code (mostly from PHP, as both are C based languages) I then moved onto jQuery. Frameworks have a lot of power, but you need a hefty wad of knowledge before using them.
