but i cannot workout how can i get the shadow on both edges?

 

i am using photoshop not fireworks

 

any advice would be great

a black 1px line on both sides of the rectangle on a different layer, then use blur/graussian blur and but the layer below the rectangle layer.

Or, you can just use the shapes tool to create a box.

 

Double click the layer in the layer select to bring up the layer effects.

 

Drop shadow.

 

Set position to 0px, fiddle with the other settings etc. then just crop a 1px slice out.

 

Dunno which way's easier, it's just the way i'm used to doing it.
