Hi all

 

I have created a few sites for different people and hosted them with the same company. They are all on the same server with the same IP address. I have linked to these sites from my webdesign site, but I was wondering if I will get penalised in the SEO as they have the same IP. Would it be a good thing in future to use different hosting companies so future sites that I build will have a different IP address so better for linking to and from my site.

As far as I know, that shouldn't really make much difference. Par a few special situations that is. For example, if the IP Address is blacklisted or gets blacklisted, that will directly affect the SEO of all of your sites. Same goes for situations where the IP might be associated with spamming sites and so on.

 

Think about Shared Hosting accounts on sites like GoDaddy, hundreds of people sharing a server, yet each individual maintains an individual SEO rating, because its based on Domain Name and not IP Address (in most cases).

If anything, linking to them is only going to help their SEO rankings. One of the main ways Google works out its rankings, is by the popularity of that website. The more websites that link to them, the more popular that site is. They use this as a scale of relevance.

 

Think about this, a site with some information about a certain person, has been linked to by 200,000 other websites. Another site, with information on the same person, has been linked to only 100 times. In Google's eyes, that shows that the first website has content that is more relevant than the content on the second website, because more people have linked to it as a resource.

 

Of course that's not all they do to work out your ranking, but its a major part of it.

Thankyou again for the info. So is it the "domain name" only that gets its SEO ranking? I host a few small page websites on my sites hosting, they are masked and re-directed. Will pages like this still be able to get their own ranking on their address that is masked, even though really they are part of my website?

From what i've read and also my experience, Google does not give as big a boost as usual when the websites are on the same IP. I'm not sure whether you would get penalized for it but it would be extremely easy to setup a whole load of sites on the same IP for the purpose of linking them and Google would not like that at all.
