just trying to teach myself PHP and MySQL so shout if this is a stupid question

I'm on a shared server and my hosts will charge me 3 times the amount to add a MySQL database (kind of against the spirit of open source software) whats to stop me downloading it from the MySQL site and simply up loading it to my server, will it work

MySQL databases require a MySQL server installed on the host machine. I assume that this is what you're trying to upload ? If this is the case then it certainly won't work.

If you've got a problem with the amount that your host is charging, simply move hosts. There are plenty of very cheap hosting services around that offer PHP and MySQL hosting...

no you cant install mysql as you need server root access, the reason they are charging is that it will use server resources if its going to cost anymore than $10/mo then your best bet is to move to www.hostgator.com... as you will have full feature hosting

I use csnewmedia It's a brilliant UK-based webhost which supports msql and php. I've been with them for a couple of months now and have never experienced any downtime. Very cheap too.

Definatly worth checking them out if you're thinking of changing host.

I echo the suggestion to move host. Charging you for MySQL is total crap.

I recommend Clook as a UK host.
