php? MS sql?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am currently studying for my degree (in psychology). My experiment is investigating internet advertising, I therefore need to run it online. I have taught myself to create a basic website and have done so.

The first problem:

I have 27 variations that I want different people to visit. I only want to have to distribute one link. I want this one link to (in order) rotate through the sites, like follows:

person 1 clicks link goes to: www.1.com

person 2 clicks link goes to: www.2.com

Person 3 clicks link goes to: www.3.com

....all the way to www.27.com where the cycle begins again.

I have generously been given some javascript that enables this to happen on one computer only (where the cookie is stored) I need this to happen for anyone on any computer on the net. I hope I'm making sense:}

I have been told that I need some kind of server side script.....my webhost offers me the oppurtunity to have a MS SQL.

Please help if you can I am sooo out of my depth!

not 100% sure what you meen but am sure we can help you, are you saying the user visits your site and then goes to www.1.com then another user enters your site and goes to www.2.com and so on untill they get to www.27.com and cycle repeats if so this would be easy enough to do

ok then you need to create a testing server to test your php scripts on your local machine i use wamp

http://www.wampserver.com/en/

this will install php mysql and apache on your pc for testing your script

i would sugest you did a few mysql php tutorial before trying to strugle so that you get the idea of how it works,

to do what you whant you would create in your database with an id field that is auto increment and big intager so that each row as a unique id,a link field that is varchar lengh set to say 60 and another field for identifying what link you are on call it linknumber set to big intager

from there when ever some one enters the site the linknumber field is icreased by 1 and the link url is fetched from the link field where id=linknumber ,this probely not making sence but if you do a few tutorials i am sure you will soon get the basics of mysql this is just one way i am sure there are other ways, like i said do a few tutorials first good luck
