    Anytime, always try to validate code, What i do is i will do header or nav and then validate before i move onto the next section.

    First, add this doctype right at the top, above your html tag:-

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
     
    It may not be the answer, but you should have a doctype.
     
    Without seeing your CSS files it's difficult to test for your problem.
