  1. In Topic: looking for a bit of feedback on web design

Please don't tell me you're actively trying to establish yourself as a web designer who is trying to get work? I don't doubt your ability to do that at some point, but if this website is a representation of your current skills, you really need to consider slowing down a bit, and actually learning how to design a website first.

A quick tip for you - please take a look at some awesome web design portfolios. A great example is Foundation Six. I'm confident you'll be able to spot the difference.

All I can see on your website is bad aligning and spacing, no real font choices, whoring of photoshop layer effects and filters (a bright yellow outer glow about fives times a thick as the letters, around blue text, doesn't look good), grammar and spelling errors, clashing colours, and a huge lack of style or direction. In the nicest possible way mate, I'm struggling to find even the smallest thing on the site that won't be considered 'very bad' by today's standards on the web.

I understand you're new to this, and it's great to see you attempting a field that's very complex and creative. My advice to you is simple - take some time to get a great understanding of HTML and CSS. Then, spend loads of time, like any good designer would, at looking at what's out there. Notice trends, bookmark pages that inspire you, search Google for some of the endless number of awesome design tutorials that will improve your creative mind and your skills in software, too.

I understand this post may seem harsh, but we're all here for all the advice and help you could need. These forums have proved an invaluable source to me and many other members when seeking answers.

Hmm, probably not a fan of bumping. Either way, I've taken a look at your website. If I had to call it good or bad at this stage, it would be bad.

The colour scheme just plain doesn't work - a plan white content area on a far too heavy gradient background isn't nice - there should also be some kind of border or drop shadow to seperate the content from the background. Also, the plain white 'clouds' around the nav bar links just look out of place. The fence background for the nav bar is far too tall, and just doesn't do it for me either.

Overall, unfortunately the site looks amateurish. There's a significant lack of polish which results in the site looking like it was knocked up in half an hour by dragging a few shapes and text fields around in Photoshop. The foundation work is there, but the design needs a lot of work to meet the standards of the modern day web.

It's not bad. Just a few things that bother me:

    • The drop shadow behind the main image on the front page is too heavy - subtlety is key!
    • Too big a gap between lines of text throughout.
    • I get the feeling that the entire site is a little... jumbo sized - which makes it look a tad 'young'. Maybe lower font sizes a bit?

Apart from that, it's pretty nice and clean.
