In Topic: Animation In Logo's
03 December 2011 - 10:51 AM
Hi Robbie
Put the animated GIF back down and walk away from the scene. Good ..... Good.
Animated gif still conjures up memories of websites with all these tacky moving things.
Having said that, less is more: Maybe something like a subtle colour change might work. Or something that animates just once so it doesn't send ones head in a spin. -
In Topic: how did you learn graphic design?
03 December 2011 - 10:45 AM
Hi Leanne
I am also sounding the self-taught horn: HTML, CSS, Photoshop, PHP, you name it (although I do confess I went to evening classes on a proper web design course so I had something on paper). I started off my web design career with FrontPage so anything after that had to be an improvement!
Before I design a website I do look through similar websites to see what they're doing right (what appeals, what seems to be working). I also flick through this and another web design mag and take note of anyhing that seems appealing.
From a graphic design perspective, there are enough Photoshop tutorials at your disposal.

@brightonmike Sorry Mate I dropped a blooper there, guess its been a long week.
@robbydesigns I am sure its the latter option rather than anything to do with your work!
I am in the same boat. I originally started up doing work for startups and small businesses but nowadays with ready made templates and sites like Moonfruit, Google Sites (et al) that just isn't an option. Now I'm finding established businesses or freelancing is definitely the way forward.

Call it a collective.
Another thing Mike, is go to local network meetings, for example, chambers of commerce for local towns and Business Link (while its still in exitence). There you can meet other business owners in the same boat and as some are based around seminars you learn something in the process too.
There are also breakfast meetings but obviously you have to pay for these (only about £15 or something).
Hope this helps. -
