Facebook Graph API
27 January 2012 - 10:58 AM
So, I'm working on a website that I doubt will interest anyone here so I'll hold off on the details. Basically I want to use Facebook as the login method. Reasons: it's a small site, will likely be preferable to my target audience and I'm too busy to create a secure login+user class.
I've download the Facebook PHP SDK and got that up. I'm using the third example on this page (ie. the PHP example below the illustration).
All works well for logging in. Perfect. But when I logout, I get various errors. The most frequent one being:
Unknown algorithm. Expected HMAC-SHA256
Which in turn causes a Javascript error so the page fails miserably.
I would post my code, but it's literally the example code with my own APP_ID and APP_SECRET details. I'm completely stumped, and have been for a full day now. I can only assume their example doesn't work because it's a cut and paste job that works up till logout.
The other common problem is that after logging out, Facebook still returns the user's details so my app will think we're logged in.
Essentially $facebook->getLogoutUrl() is screwed, at least pour moi.
If anyone could piece together a working version of the example, I would be (almost) eternally grateful. -
Video hosting via email
16 January 2012 - 12:08 PM
Fellow geeks,
I'm looking for a service which allows for simple *private* video hosting and submission via email. I'm unsure if Vimeo would allow for the type of video that will be being submitted - it's nothing rude before the comments come in.
Basically I need a secret-ish email address that I can hand out to a number of people to send videos to. These videos must be kept private upon receipt. YouTube allows for public email submission, but I can't have all the videos going live on my account because, naturally, someone will do something silly. Of course I could set up a new YT account, but they'd still be public.
Appreciate any suggestions.

.htaccess troubles
15 November 2011 - 01:48 PM
I'm trying to password protect a directory, very quickly and very simply, with .htaccess and .htpasswd.
I've got Wordpress installed in the root directory, with the relevant Wordpress .htaccess file (unmodified).
The .htaccess file in my sub directory is as follows:
AuthUserFile /home/location/of/.htpasswd/file AuthType Basic AuthName "Enter the username and password..." Require valid-user
And the .htpasswd file:
andy:mypassword
All I'm getting is a Wordpress 404 error. If I remove the .htaccess file from my sub directory, I get the Apache listing page (expected).
I'm a htpasswd newbie, help/guidance is hugely appreciated - this is fairly important. -
Restoring Windows...
11 November 2011 - 07:55 PM
Evening all.
So there's a couple of PCs in my close relations which have come to their seemingly inevitable death - both are running the beautifully crafted Vista. I'm not a PC guy so bare with me...
What's the best method for restoring Windows afresh? Shall I literally copy the contents of 'Documents' to an external drive (aka. my iMac), format and copy back across? I'm restoring both to Win 7. I don't want any of the programs to be moved across - many of them have been installed along with their respective adware/bloatware which is partly the issue with both PCs. Is there any backup software to quicken the process? Any compatibility issues with regards to the filing structure of Vista vs. Win 7?
After the restore I'm obviously going to get some anti-virus on them ASAP. What's the hap with AV at the moment? AVG Free was the last cool kid on the block for me - I'm sure things have moved on. Any other security software needed these days?
Help/guidance much appreciated by myself + family + that girl in my pic

Flash just took a bullet
09 November 2011 - 06:48 PM
It's rare for me to start a topic here but I've found us a controversial one!
At long last Adobe have given in with Flash on mobile devices. One small step backwards for Adobe, and one (giant) leap for web semantics; in the long, long run - who knows, perhaps Wolfram Alpha will answer correctly - and Siri?
At risk of being perhaps too positive, we may get to use HTML 5 + CSS 3 sooner than first thought! People want 'flash'y websites, but they also want websites to work on tablets. Hopefully webkit (and gecko if you're that way inclined) with a JS library will be the answer.
I've never been what you'd call 'a supporter' of Flash as most of you know. Noisy adverts, irritating animations and absolutely no semantics is not my style - not to mention waiting seconds for a page to load, or even minutes?! Having said that I have always appreciated that it has it's place in the simple online desktop browser game market.
Thoughts? Happy that we're starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel? Perhaps Flash is your skill, so this is worrying news?

25 Mar 2010 - 18:23I find it very time consuming, and not very rewarding [anymore]. Some comments I've directly received have made me come to the conclusion that I should no longer be involved in WDF.
I hope all is well. :)
