  1. History of a town, a database?

    17 February 2012 - 01:02 PM

I'm toying with creating a history of the local town.
It includes areas, streets, buildings, people, a timeline, maps, photos etc.
It's not going to built in a day...

The obvious choice is a Wiki of some description.
I'm playing with MediaWiki, but it's slow and I'm the only user. It has other drawbacks too.

And there's an obvious disadvantage to a wiki in general. You need to make the link on both ends..
Okay if you have millions of editors. Not so good if you have one.

Anybody done anything similiar or could suggest a path to look at

I'm looking at the prospect of creating a database from scratch but., as Facebook would say, it's complicated...
  2. PhpBB forum getting bombarded

    02 December 2011 - 01:32 PM

I have a phpbb Forum which is being bombarded by rubbish from around the world.

I''m moderating it so i have to confirm each post but I'm getting 40-50 bogus posts a day from all over the place.
I'm banning ips and users (almost 2000 of each so far!) but they keep coming..

It's for adding details about local people who died in the wars.

It seems to have been put at the top of spamming lists.

    Anybody any advice?
  3. http://localhost MS Access problems

    24 November 2011 - 12:02 PM

    It's done it again.

I'm testing using IIS 5.1 on XP Pro. It's been working fine for 12 months.
Last week it gave me this error.

"Error Type: Microsoft JET Database Engine (0x80004005) Unspecified error"

I've uninstalled IIS, reinstalled, let IIS create a new Inetpub directory.
http://localhost will bring up the default page but once I try and access a subdirectory of wwwroot (each different website) it's firing up the error above.

I've went through the properties of the default and my subdirectories and they're exactly the same.

It seems to be a permissions issue, but where?

This happened last year and I eventually had to reinstall XP Pro.
Couldn't find a way round it.

    HELP!
  4. 1and1.co.uk

    30 July 2011 - 10:44 AM

It's not a company I would use normally but I inherited this account.

Anyway, anybody ever tried cancelling a domain with this crowd?
    here's their instructions...
    http://faq.oneandone...act_tool/1.html
a litle over-complicated, one could say.

As for renewals.. because I only use proper companies, I've never encountered this type of behaviour.

Asking why I only got an invoice that I was being billed for renewal, rather than a reminder that I was up for renewal, I got this reply:

"Upon further checking, the domain name mywebsite.com got renewed prior to the cancellation (renewal date 19/06/2011-19/06/2012 ) .
This is the reason why we billed you for the domain name.

Also, dated Feb 18, 2011, we send you a notification email about the renewal of your domain name
with the email subjectline "Reminder: 1&1 Domain Renewal Notification".

1 reminder, four months before it's due. Now that's what I call underhanded.

Be thankful there are proper web hosting companies out there.
    You have been warned...
  5. Bad spelling

    14 July 2011 - 10:56 AM

Spelling mistakes 'cost millions' in lost online sales

    Interesting little discusson. isorta agree.

If I see spelling mistakes on a website I will think - English not first language - could be dodgy - and run away...
