Starting Out as a Designer...Advice and Thoughts Welcome

Hi
My name is Seán. I've always been interested in web design, design, apps etc. but I don't consider myself to be any good at it I've chanced my arm doing some websites and bits and pieces for myself and I learn quick enough and think I've a good overall idea of how things work (extremely generally)
I posted an Ad here a while back looking for a Wordpress Website. Got some great responses but as it turned out went with a local designer who I had been in contact with. Anyway I'm quite interested in Wordpress and web design in general. I'm a professional Musician who has a lot of down time when not touring and even when I am most of my time is spent with laptop in hand. I've been studying Business with Open Uni for the past 2 years and I have to now choose my second subject as part of a joint honours. I'm at a stage where I can choose my degree and I've decided to use Business as my second subject and Computing & IT as my First.
Here's a link to the course synopsis BSc (Honours) Computing & IT and a second subject
I'd like to end up with a good general knowledge of everything from PS design to coding etc. I am especially interested in iPhone App Development also but I'm wondering should one concentrate on 1 aspect rather than trying to be an all rounder? Should I concentrate on learning to code and leave the PS Design to someone who's been at that side of things for years?
I'm not looking to make money here or anywhere...it'd be nice to make a supplementary income some day but I'm not a dreamer either!
So where should one start? Are there any worthwhile online classes/tutorials (That are interesting and interactive rather than just a bunch of boring 100 page wikipedia like tutorials)
What are the signs of a good solid groundwork in a designer? Bearing in mind i'm interested in Wordpress maybe Joomla stuff as opposed to carts etc..Maybe creating themes and that..
Where to start...What to do what not to do...What are the mistakes many make?
Any comments on the course too would be very appreciated...I'm looking at concentrating on either Software or Solutions Dev there...
Looking forward to some replies!
Cheers

Website Design Possibly Wordpress

Hi
I'm looking to get a website designed. It is for an irish music band so it is mainly information based. I'll try to follow the posting rules as best I can:
Country: Can be anywhere but must have perfect English. High preference to US or Europe.
Scope: It's a new website for a band. No special features really. Music Player, Gallery, Very small checkout for 2 to 3 items (Paypal Links). The main work in the site is the look of it. It needs to be striking. I have a large amount of unedited professional photos from the band that could be used in the site. To give people an idea here's a link to a few sites that would be very much along the same lines http://www.guidewiresmusic.com/ http://www.ciorras.com/ http://www.slide.ie/
Size: As said above the site would be Home, About Us, Tour Dates, Reviews, Media (Gallery & Video), Store, Links, Contact Us, Press Area
Time Frame: As soon as possible really but not urgent. Happy to get going straight away.
Budget: I am unsure about the budget but I'm not going to waste anyones time here. It is not above €500.
Features: I can't think of any extra features other than those mentioned. It would need to be easily updatable for tour dates etc.
Other Features: Of the unedited photos that I have I would like to get these touched up and would be happy to have it done by the same person if he/she is interested. They are all high quality and just need some fine touches to give them the finished look.
I think this is all. Looking forward to the replies please be detailed in your responses I don't want email addresses for me to contact. Pitch the ideas to me.
Regards
Seán
