Topics I've Started

  1. How viable is this idea? Specialising?

    15 March 2012 - 09:27 PM

    Hey guys,

    I've been considering this for about a year now, haven't gotten round to it because I've been pretty busy with work and running my two e-commerce sites. I mainly run them and do freelance work for a few companies, I get regular work from them which is good, but I need to make a new portfolio to start getting new work etc.

    My idea was to become a "freelance web + graphic designer" specialising in the "Fitness" sector. I've got a couple of big clients I've done work for in this sector, and it's a massive passion of mine. So thought it would be good to do.

    My Worries:

    1. Should I showcase existing clients work? E.g One supplement Company might not like me working for another, or do I just take that on the chin?

    Plus Points:

    I could mention my work has been featured in magazines such as Men's Fitness, Womens Fitness and Flex magazine from existing clients projects.

    I'm not sure how viable this is, or even if it's worth doing, might be worth a punt? But I thought I'd air it out, write down some thoughts and see what some of you thought of it. Has anyone trying specializing before?

    I also wondered about branding, I have my existing site - www.palmercreative.co.uk which needs remaking. I wondered whether to go down that route, or buy a typical domain like www.fitnessdesigner.co.uk or call myself a sport related sounding brand - (Generic) but something like ActivDesign (as an example)?

    I'm sure I'll still pick up the regular work but wondering if I could start moving in to the sector I really want to work in more?

    Be great to hear your thoughts! Sorry I know it's a bit of an essay :)

    Thanks,
    Chris
  2. Easiest way to approach this problem?

    28 February 2012 - 07:52 PM

    Hey guys,

    I can never remember the solution to fix this, I've read up on a few different ways but wondering what the easiest you guys have found?

    I want the sidebar background to reach the the footer, can't set fixed height due to differing page lengths!

    Advice much appreciated.

    Thanks,

  3. Linking a menu item?

    10 February 2012 - 03:31 PM

    Hey guys,

    I'm struggling to make a button link (sounds crazy) Heres my code:

    <ul id="nav" class="dropdown">
    	<a href="#"><li class="home-btn"></li></a>
    	<li class="about-btn">
    		<ul>
    			<li><a href="#">Company Profile</a></li>
    			<li><a href="#">Ethos</a></li>
    			<li><a href="#">Our People</a></li>
    			<li><a href="#">Benefits of working with us</a></li>
    			<li><a href="#">Join us</a></li>
    		</ul>

    	</li>

    The "Home" Button works fine, and the "About" has a drop down with company profile etc as sub items. But I need to make the actual top "About" button link? Am I missing something really stupid here?

    I've tried <a href="#"><li class="about-btn"></a> But that doesn't work, presumably because the </li> isnt inside the </a>.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Chris
  4. Which Cart to go with?

    06 February 2012 - 02:52 PM

    Hey guys,

    I'm getting to the point where I need to rebuild one of my websites, it's an e-commerce toy shop online (http://www.wonderlandtoys.co.uk) primarily because it's on BigCommerce at the moment, I'm going to go over 100 products ($25/month) and it doesn't have Affiliate features as such.

    The two I've been looking at are Opencart and Magento, slightly swaying toward Opencart as I'm hearing good things about it and seems simpler? I mainly do front end development, but can handle making changes, will hopefully buy a template and edit it to fit.

    Was wondering what experience you guys had with these and which you would recommend? I want one with preferably an easy to use back end and as little on going costs as possible.

    I also really need to keep my urls the same if possible? Not sure how achievable that is!

    I've got my own hosting.

    Thanks,
    Chris
  5. iPad/Phone no Hover? How can I get around this?

    06 February 2012 - 11:39 AM

    Hey guys,

    Having a bit of a problem and wondering if anyone can help/shed some light on how I can fix this.

    I've built a site, it's ready to go live: http://www.akordpeople.co.uk but the drop downs i.e Development link don't work on the iPad or iPhone. Seems to be because there's no hover on the phone/pad?

    Any ideas how I can fix or get around this? (Easily)

    Thanks,
    Chris
