  1. In Topic: What is the best screen resolution to design for?

    Posted 31 Dec 2009

Usually design for 1024*768. If the design is to be fixed width I would normally go for 960px which leaves a bit of wiggle room for different browsers, scrollbars etc.
  2. In Topic: When a client tries to become the designer how do you tell them they're messing things up?

    Posted 14 Aug 2009

In situations like this it's always difficult because whilst you want to please the client, the reason they approached you in the first place is that you're a design professional and experienced at creating web sites. If it's something you feel very strongly about I would argue the point as best you can.

How about creating a second layout with the changes implemented so that you can compare them side by side, and talk the client through the potential issues.
  3. In Topic: Client wants banner ads on his site - any recommendations?

Might be worth looking at OIO Publisher (http://www.oiopublisher.com) which can be used to sell and serve ads on any site - you set up the ad spaces available, size, cost etc.. and potential advertisers can buy online without leaving the site.

It isn't free but certainly sounds ideal for what you're looking for.

Like the logo and colour scheme a lot. I think some it would benefit from really clear definition between the different parts of the page - even just a couple of nicely styled <hr> tags. Having some of the screenshots "above the fold" might also make the large block of text appear less daunting to first time visitors.
  5. In Topic: Desktop or Laptop

Desktop for me because I find it much easier to work with the larger monitor and screen res. Use a netbook if I'm out and about, but I couldn't imagine trying to actually do anything on it.
