It's not open source but LemonStand is fantastic - http://lemonstandapp.com.

I use to use Zen Cart but switched to LemonStand because even though there is a $300 license I can develop a better site in half the time it takes to do a Zen Cart one. It's well worth looking at.

WP E-commerce is fine as long as you don't want to change it to much and I agree with the above it's more of an add on than a full solution. It's quite locked down and it you want to start adding home page sliders and other extras will have to pay for the privilege.

I don't know of any plugins that would achieve this. I guess most people just use the Media upload, that is pretty straight forward, is the client not able to do it that way when they add a page or post?
