I'll be upfront and say that I am a very amateur web "developer" but am now beginning to ramp up my knowledge by learning php, and sql. I have read numerous posts about creating a test linux box to play with and familiarise myself on. I have chosen Ubuntu 8.04 as my OS but am unsure as to whether I should use the packaged LAMP or install the Linux equivalent XAMPP package?

I understand that the LAMP package that come with Linux is second to none on account it can be fully integrated, but I am coming from a Windows background, where you either manually installed Apache, MySQL and PHP and hoped you had the syntax right or you would spend the next few weeks trying to sort thru logs to find the problem. Or alternatively you downloaded and installed XAMPP, WAMP or one of the preconfigured titles.

I have used XAMPP under XP without a problem as a base. I am sure there are pros and cons to both in Linux but as a newbie that just wants to get on with learning the ins and outs what do people recommend?

Thanks in Advance :help:

TBH I personally would just stick with XAMPP on XP...

If your looking to have just what you did on XP use the Linux build of XAMPP (formerly LAMPP). For web development distributions of Linux such as Ubuntu are exceptional and you'll find them a lot more efficient to develop on than the likes of Windows XP.

Thanks for the offer of assistance. I have had an account with a company that runs predominantly Fedora Core servers to host their sites and I thought it would be best to replicate their environment. Everyone has said you should be atleast familiar with Linux on account of its widespread use. I might shy away from Fedora for the time being. I have a small machine that has ubuntu "workstation" installed and thought I might play with that just to start with.

I may scale it up later. I am assuming that configuring LAMp on ubuntu workstation runs in a similar fashion to the server version. I only want to play around, run a couple virtual sites that I can tinker with.

If you don't have root access to the server (ie. you don't actually own the server),there is nothing that you can do from your limited account to stop abuse from other accounts. You need to contact your hosting provider to resolve the issue.

I personally prefer to just install Apache, PHP, MySQL from scratch rather than use a package like Xampp. It's very easy on Ubuntu, just apt-get install apache2 php5 mysql-server and do the same for whatever extensions/modules you need.

I use WAMP on XP, it's fine (and in my opinion superior to XAMPP)

If you are learning than try to try to install PHP 4/5 and MySQL 4/5 on Ubuntu. I mean try to run dual PHP
and MySQL. You can also try to install AMP on Windows 2008 server to understand the difference.

Most of the world's best hosting providers are using CENTOS 5 as their server distros. So you can try working on that too.
