Can someone tell me the best place to go where I can start a Private Forum that is pretty much set up already? I want it to be done already, except I want my own colors. OR what is the best way I can set up a forum? I have Wordpress on my host site with tons of memory. I also read that the vB program is best. I would appreciate some direction. Thanks.

I have just used phpbb for a client. A very good forum indeed and very simple to set up. (www.phpbb.com I think)

If you want a already set-up forum then http://invisionfree.com might be what you're looking for. If you're looking at setting up your own forum then grab a copy of either PHPbb2 as Helen recommended or try Simple Machines Forum. Simple Machines is more modern than PHPbb2, but PHPbb2 is more mature as a script.

vBulletin is the best forum software I've ever used, but it costs a license fee to use. You could get it for free by downloading it from a pirate site, but this is something I would seriously not recommend. Not just because these people work hard to put out a great product, but because usually illegal copies of the software can't be updated (leaving security holes) and worse than that people could easily script a backdoor into the code (as it's very easy to do, it being uncompiled source code).

phpBB2 is just about to be retired (in Jan 09).

phpBB3 is much more feature rich out of the box, easy to install but is slightly more difficult to get to grips with from the admin side. The permissions can be a little confusing until you get the hang of them but the support site has loads of info and help.

Try Freeforums

I set one up to try it out and learn a bit about phpbb Admin - zroadster.freeforums as you will see, I've customized it to suit me.

When using it free, you get the adverts, but if you pay the adverts go. You can also buy a domain name and use that instead of the name.freeforum

Thank you all. I don’t mind adverts. I will look into it.

I looked into invisionfree.com and really like it. I want something that I can just go into and change the type size, colors etc.
So thank you Cabbage! And it’s free.
