I keep seeing it mentioned. What is it and why is it useful? Is it something a beginner front end developer should be learning?

Node is basically server side javascript so would not be useful for a front-end developer, but there are parts of node that could help your workflow i.e. grunt

Node is a server-side platform. It is part of javascript programing. It is useful for a frontend developer. User makes various application from this javascript programing.
