Zen Cart™
Zen Cart™ truly is the art of e-commerce; a free, user-friendly, open source shopping cart system. The software is being developed by group of like-minded shop owners, programmers, designers, and consultants that think e-commerce could be and should be done differently. Some "solutions" seem to be complicated programming exercises instead of responding to users' needs, Zen Cart™ puts the merchants and shoppers requirements first. Similarly, other programs are nearly impossible to install and use without an IT degree, Zen Cart™ can be installed and set-up by anyone with the most basic web site building and computer skills.

osCommerce
osCommerce is an Open Source based online shop e-commerce solution that is available for free under the GNU General Public License. It features a rich set of out-of-the-box online shopping cart functionality that allows store owners to setup, run, and maintain their online stores with minimum effort and with no costs, fees, or limitations involved.

AgoraCart
The powerful "Free" Open Source ecommerce shopping cart software solution that offers a very wide range of "out-of-the-box" features that allow you to setup an online ecommerce solution ranging from a simple template based store to the integration of a complex visual design concept containing all the creative magic of your web designer.

Are any of the above 'Standards Compliant'?

My programming colleague uses Cactushop and says it's brilliant - it's XHTML+CSS and Standard Compliant...the only downfall for me is that it's ASP rather than PHP.

Do you know if there are any e-commerce solutions out there that are PHP based and written in XHTML+CSS?

I know that zen-cart is XHTML 1.0 compliant, and uses CSS as well. Although they do say "NEARLY tableless" design, so I'm not sure what that means.

i hear good things about zen cart.

i'm not sure about shopping cart architecture though.

would you use it with 1shoppingcart (i think it's a shopping cart, so likely not)
or 2co (2checkout)?

or do you interface it with a payment provider.

are there any FAQs available?

i've been looking at this area, but am not sure how to proceed

I found paypal as the best options as for as features and accessibility is concerned because of the large customer base and no monthly charge from sellers, easy setup etc.

Well, from working with both zen-cart and oscommerce, I can say that it is definately easier to edit the look (template, theme, skin whatever they call it) on zen-cart. You can integrate many different payment processors too.

Agreed! plus it's *Almost* tableless design, so it's very good for a freebie. I just hate customising scripts then having to carry across the changes come update time. As that's th eproblem with open-source scripts is that people find vulnrabilities easier than commercial products.

But all-in-all this is my first choice for a Free shopping cart script! :)

Has anyone mentioned Magneto Commerce yet? It's still in development, but you can download a build of it. It looks amazing, standards compliant, very modular and uses PHP.

I am working on a shop at the moment - using StoreSprite - and it's the first one that me - as a designer rather than programmer, have been able to work out how to edit and configure straight off the template! All the CSS is on one file - you can just drag it into Dreamweaver or wherever and fiddle about till the cows come home, and there are only a couple of default template pages to edit and that's it!

The back end bit is easy to uinderstand and customize and configure and TinyMCE can be integrated into it so you can do stuff on the fly. Lots of Payment gateways supported or they will builod one in for you for a nominal fee.

Great Free Support Forum where they are totally on the case and really helpful even if you ask totally numpty stuff. No waiting days for a reply they are there in minutes usually.

I really do rate this. :yahoo:

I am using zeuscart which is the best e-commerce shopping carts software. Its open source, user friendly and it is licensed under free GPL. Beside all other features this software is based on PHP Smarty templates, this makes it very flexible and easy to modify. For more details http://www.zeuscart.com/

Zeus cart is good but very time consuming when making a new look to the template files.

Hey guys

I have no personal experience yet, but while things are slow I have been making a point of researching and trying out things I am not so hot on.

I have just discovered http://www.ecwid.com/ -ECWID. It has versions for wordpress, MODx, drupal, joomla and more I think and looks good to me. It has a great community board and lots of support / documentation.

Just thought I'd share really! :D

I believe I have the perfect solution for you :)

I developed an eCommerce template that is "easy to code for PHP" as it's based on the OpenSource framework CodeIgniter, also is "Ajax powered" and very "lightweight".

You can download my work here - http://sourceforge.n...alshopuk/files/
Live Demo here - http://www.totalshopuk.com/

Let me know what you think as I haven't had much feedback.

Regards,
ibizara

Looks really good and as i have some knowledge of PHP and CI, i have downloaded it to have a closer look. But.....just a little confused as to how i can implement this into my own site template. Any help would be very much appreciated, but i will continue to have a play around and try and work it out myself?

+1 for Magento http://www.magentocommerce.com/

but also becoming quite popular is prestashop http://www.prestashop.com/

I am just looking in to Prestashop (having lost 2 potential magento clients in a row to this thing). It is not as good as magento by a long stretch but it can run on much lower spec hardware and money talks.

Both are fully open source.

cheers
