Hi,
I am designing a site for a local building company which is just like a basic introduction to the company.
I have looked around at alot of sites and even the most basic of them appear to have some aspect of Javascript.
To be honest I just can not fathom the use of Javascript.
Anyone have any suggestions of a link to a good description of Javscript and not W3C site please!

What sort of things are you looking to use javascript for?
I've been designing websites for years now and I still really, really, really dont like having to use javascript! Nowadays you can achieve effects such as rollovers with CSS and HTML instead of javascript.

Alot of sites seem to have JS however, such rules as onpageonload etc
So not needed then?

You should be able to get away with not knowing any javascript. Obviously as a web developer a small bit of knowledge on the subject might help.
The way I see javascript is that it's a tool to enhance the users experience. However, it can be turned off in the users browser settings so I always make sure the site works with or without it. You should never rely on javascript.
If you want to use bits of javascript in your websites you should look at javascript libraries such as MooTools, Prototype and the one I reccommend, jQuery. These libraries will allow you to add useful bits of javascript without having to learn too much about how it works.

If you actually want to learn JavaScript, I recommend www.javascriptkit.com -- it's pretty good for references and seems to give a pretty good low-down on how to do stuff. As for the logic, that's up to you.
But JavaScript is most definately not required on any basic site.
