Hello, everybody. Welcome to the first topic not startet by Wisely himself.

I own the domain arcticdesigns.net and want to put something on it. Now it's just a place I put random stuff, but I want to build a portifolio. I feel that some words from you guys could lead my in a direction when it comes to this design. - After all. I can't really design a green field on a sunny day with this domain name. :)

Ok. So I want you to write down key words, thoughts and sentences you think about when you hear arctic, design, arctic designs and etc. This will be vital to me when it comes to communicate in the right way with my cosumers and they're expectations when the hear the domain name.

My words/thoughts:
- White
- Light blue
- Ice
- Snow
- North
- Black/white images
- Abondoned places

Do you have any words, thoughts or sentences for my design? I would be very glad if you would share them with me. :)

I think of snowflakes, white, cool blues, dark oceans with icebergs..the usual wintery stuff.
I don't have any negative connotations on it though I feel it is a positive name.

Apart from the words already mentioned, my first thoughts were:

Igloos
Polar Bears
Icebergs
Icicles
"The Poles" – The actual sticks in the ground
Eskimos

I don't think I'm good enough to create realistic Northern lights, but the thought have crossed my mind. :)

Thank you very much for, people. Hoping for even more. I didn't expected this to get such a number of replies in a short perriode of time. :D

They don't have to be realistic. You could take inspiration from the shapes and colours to create something else.

Way to go everyone!
A few from me (a bit sleepy to be earth-shattering I'm affraid):

Clear/clarity
Refreshing
Cool
Sub-zero
Sharp
Below (temperature, icebergs 9/10ths below the surface - just like good design)
Frost effects like in the 'ice' beer tv ads
Yeti - cutesy cartoon character
'Icons' frozen inside ice blocks
Clean, green and envronmental
Uncharted and unexplored
Norwegian fishermen

And polar bears don't eat penguins, not just because they can't get the wrappers off, but because penguins live in the antarctic!!!!
All rubbish. :lazy:
9/10ths below might be all right coupled with the northern lights which is a cool idea. The northern lights as a header/footer or page background and iced-up things for 'texture' around the body elements.

Don't forget to tie-in the copy whatever you decide!

No - I meant the best kind of design is 90% invisible - if you count typography as 10%!!!!!! ;)

I count that as a compliment – I wholeheartedly agree that much of a good design lies beneath the surface, invisible to the average eye. Without it though it would collapse – but alas, we don't want this to become another design bashing thread ;)

I think of the white top of mountains. Maybe you could help your clients climb to their peak?

Hmmm - I think compartmentalised, sectioned-off, clearly devided/defined - as in articulated. Had you asked about Arctic I might have thought snow etc, but artic?

Well if you read the whole post you would have noticed that the Artic in the title is just a typo :pp

I just keep thinking of eskymo's site or things that have already been said, so I'm not that useful. I love the idea of the northern lights, even if it was just hinted at in the colours you used I think it could be amazing and different :)

Lol, to be completely honest I think of Eskymo's website

Ice cubes strike me for some reason
Definitely a very clean/crisp design making the best use of blues and whites.

I do think that to have something to do with the Northern lights would be AWESOME if you could pull it off. Certainly worth a shot!

Spoiler

- I know the montains is not perfectly sorted out, but I felt that I was more important to catch the thought than to get all locked on this idea.

I'll try that, but I'm really no illustrator. But, yeah, it would be a great mascot. :)

i had this same idea a while back, and got started on it and realized i have no artistic ability in my body lol. You could just find a pic of a penguin on google or something and then trace it using illustrator,

this is as far as I got..

Peru's bloomin coldwater! The Humboldt Current is freezing cold deep Antartic water. But you're right they're not just in the South Pole - I've dived with them in the Galapagos and seen them in Australia. We even have 6 species of penguin here in NZ (then again we're not too far from Antartica in the South Island - especially in winter it feels much closer!)

I only mention penguins because:
It's always worth bearing in mind that you want to promote 'accuracy' in your designs. OK, so maybe not everyone would go 'he got that wrong' - but some might or it might be some subconcious 'niggle' that might be playing in the back of someones mind. Never underestimate how much our brains process in the 'background' without us noticing - it's what leads to those 'feelings' that something is just not quite right.

[added: @BWD: Don't you dare change your cute 'Poke Me' avatar though - it's adorable!!!]
