Have a thorn in my side with a couple of things at the moment - some of which are a recurring pattern. Just to name a few:

  • Creating a custom mobile navigation in CSS to use in multiple projects (getting there though)
  • Choosing a font that's consistent crossbrowser (Firefox and/or Chrome rendering 'issues')
  • Deciding whether to get away with a .png or push for .svg images for logos
  • Rewording my standard contract to still sound human, while covering all bases
  • Stop fiddling with things and keep the pace up

There is a motive for this post, though. Do you have a regular gripe that keeps rearing it's head that you've been meaning to solve e.g. "been meaning to brush up my skills on..." or "get an ergonomic chair instead of hunching over on this laundry basket" etc... etc...

Clients are a given, as are people who don't appreciate the work we do (including how long we spent preparing dinner <sniff> and not feeling appreciated (in my best Bender [Futurama!] impression - ha ha! :D)

OK my current gripe outside of the usual 'egotistical client micro managing' issue is my eldest son puts the word 'basically' in front of every freaking sentence! On top of this it has caused my younger son to copy.

"Where's your school bag?"

"Basically I put it over there"

Irritating to say the least.

I have a weird feeling I have said something not quite right....

"Basically I put it over there"

LOL Funny, but not if you have to live with that every day :)

Creating a custom mobile navigation in CSS to use in multiple projects (getting there though)

Need a hand?

That is very true :)

On topic: Clients who take their time. After all I organise my time according their availability, so it's a bit rude of them I think.

Glad someone else feels the same :) I wouldn't say I'm grumpy, just a bit of a control freak/perfectionist and more dissatisfied with myself. Still, that doesn't mean we can't have a whinge ;)

I bet you are hurr hurr..

Oh oh - Finbarr Saunders has joined the forum ;)

Basically mine is too young for that, but she is basically saying 'like' as is in, "Like, where's my Peppa Pig". I think she's basically picking it up from nursery ;). If you can tolerate it, you'll pick up 'basically' about 20 times in the first 3 minutes of a Jeremy Kyle program. Quality viewing.

We should also have a 'stupidest / most f*cking backwards thing ive heard all day' thread.

Ill start "Ive got the text on the button now, I used position absolute to put a span over the button and that works" this was someone who has worked as a professional developer for nearly 2 years. Shocking  :shok:

Now we are nearly at the completion of a design that took months. Client suddenly starts reading dodgy content and marketing strategy websites and decides they need to change things and add things and etc, etc, etc, etc...

Very frustrating, especially after discussing the "strategy" for weeks and just when basically everything is decided on, they come with something like this.

Ah that old chestnut. I don't know why they bother contracting out when they are so equipped in marketing strategy.

Top two of today:

"We need the text on the site to be an image because it's better for accessibility". And "I quoted two hours but it's going to take me at least a day looking at the docs".

The ignorance of people towards microdata. I'm tired of the stupid comments on Google Webmaster Tools, the constant torrent of 'why won't my picture show up' and other such aesthetic uses of microdata when it's much more than serps and keywords ... freaking imbeciles! Gaaaaaaaaaahhhhh!  :shok:

I love this thread.

This mornings two:

[developer] I've removed the shopping basket button [me] why? [developer] because I don't think we need it [me] what happens if you navigate away from the basket page? [developer] I don't know, people will find it if they want it.

Secondly my boss hates responsive design, after explaining that all our competitors have made it their standard way of building sites, I'm still no further with this argument *sigh* :( .

My son is refering to everything being "epic" at the moment.

I try to explain that the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt and Beethoven are epic. Building a zombie-trap in Minecraft isn't.

Oh my God! Was asked by a client to make a few adjustments to their site. I was in the CMS admin checking the changes when I saw one of their categories boasting over 200+ keywords stuffed in the meta section yet only 1 sentence on the page! When I asked the client he laughed and said 'that's my wifes brother, he does seo' ... oh my.

Is your boss a web developer? I mean if he is and hates responsive design i would be questioning his intelligence, its a vital part of web design these days, as you said it comes as standard with 90% of freelancer's and agencies. I always build it responsive, show the customer if they really dont want it i just change to fixed widths...

Good news - two designs that I have been working on (closely with a client!) for 2 months have been approved today. Not so good news - the same client wants another (one more) design :D

Two months? Wow! Either sounds like a big project or a meticulous client. Hope it works out for you.

While I'm here I'll have a quick moan, but it's no big deal. Finished a site and uploaded to client's server and have been testing. Did pretty good on my servers, but having to go through their .htaccess adding deflate this, deflate that and adding expries is not only a chore but a bore. Still - a necessary evil ;)

Ha ha more of the latter, I would say, I feel for the developer that will "inherit" the project.

Yeah, there is always something coming out of nowhere when you move a site to client's server, isn't there?
