Hey gang!

I stumbled across this forum whilst on a VPS hunt and normally I cba with forums but since this one actually looks nice I figured what the heck, sign and post!

I'm a designer from just outside London ... been making web stuff for quite a few years now. My design skills are 'ok', the usual suspects - creative suite / xhtml + html (trans/strict) / css and some shabby jQuery but it's getting better. I'm pretty clued up on accesibility, compliancy and onsite seo.

The reason I got here is I was looking to speedtest Heart Internet and found a site saying this forum is hosted with them. How do you find their service? I've currently got a 2 year old dedicated from fasthosts (don't groan - I KNOW!) and I'm crying out to change as I'm sick of their shoddy support (or lack of).

Cheers all ... gonna have a nose about.

:D

Oof. What beast of a site are you running that needs dedicated iron?

As far as Heart goes... their shared stuff is the usual "unlimited" oversold crap, but I was happy to see that their VPS boxes list guaranteed CPU as well as the usual RAM and disk.

Welcome to WDF, anyway.

It's not really the 'need' of dedicated iron. I ended up with a dedicated as I did have fasthosts reseller and I was sick of Err 500 thanks to other muppets loading naf code on the box - with reseller each time you set up a site it goes on the next available slot on a box, real 'lucky dip' hosting with who your server buddies were and and so dedicated box was the only real option at the time (I only host my clients and my projects, no one can ftp but me), VPS I don't even think was an option.

The problem with the box is it now costs more to run than their newer server and slow compared to speed tests with VPS boxes. The thing is with a dedicated upgrading is a nightmare! I rang for a bigger HD to be added, and got the 'we can't do that' from their support. In fact every time i ring with something they never help and take days to reply to say they can't.

By going VPS I will more than half my hosting bill and have the luxury of customising when I need without having to get a new server and set it up yet again. In addition with VPS you get Raid 10, much more stable than my current dedicated box. I can only imagine how much my own dedicated raid 10 box would cost! *shudders*

Oh and thanks for the welcome :D

I'm on a reseller package with a very good host at the moment (NuBlue), but I'm thinking of cutting costs by moving to a Heart VPS. My real issue is the downgrade in support, but times are hard and it would halve my bill.

It's a real shame because NuBlue are awesome.

Yeah support is sort of chicken and the egg really - with good hosting companies you don't ever need support yet their support is good ... and bad hosts have bad support.

I've often thought RAID 10 might be overdoing it a bit, TBH. It's lovely to have belt and braces but I'd be happy with RAID 6, especially with a hot spare. I think that's the best tradeoff for performance/stability/capacity.
