Person 1 - What do you think of the new Apple phone?

Person 2 - I like it but it's not as good as the Samsung's latest smartphone.

Person 3 - Yeah, with the Sansung it's a better price as well and you get more features.

Person 4 - It's not just about the price it's the quality.

Person 1 - But what do you think of the new Apple phone (hissy fit, can we get back on topic)

Person 3 - yeah it's good but we don't get as many colours as the XYZ phone..

Person 1 - What's colour got to do with it?! I asked what you think of the new Apple phone..



Bizarre.. Conversation does not work like that so why are forums so fixated on it.

I think many people get confused by this whole 'on topic / off topic' thing.

80% of this forum is support rather than discussion so just emphasise the point i'm trying to make here's your convo again in the correct context...

Person One: Hello is that that AppleCare centre?
Person Two: Yes How can i help you?
Person One: My phone's broken and is crackling
Person Two: That's a shame, nice phone though isn't it?
Person One: Yes but it needs fixing
Person Two: That's a shame, do you know of any good MP3 Players?
Person Three: Apple suck
Person Four: No way man they're cool
Person Five: ^^^ Lol
Person Ten: Web Design India
Person One: Hello...? My phone?
Person Two: Apple are awesome
Person Six: Android FTW

Ah, that's where I made my mistake. I thought this place was a discussion area, not a support service.

In that case... I think I'd better not waste too much time on here as there is a limit to the amount of support I ought to give strangers without payment, also since these people are technically rivals it's potentially a conflict of interest.

Well you can be as sarcastic as you like but i think you'll find that most (and i say most as i can't vouch for everything on here) general discussions don't have any one saying 'On topic please'. The guidelines are pretty loose and easy going on here but they still exist to keep all members in a safe, productive, helpful environment.

If a conversation is quite obviously an open ended discussion (such as BrightonMike's industry discussion) then i personally won't try to keep it on any sort of track as that's how free flowing discussion works.
