Hi all,

I feel it would be great to be able to talk and collaborate with fellow WDF members instantly via some kind of irc chatroom.

What does the community feel about this idea?

cheers,

Andy

Just had a look, it still exists but noone in there. I'm sure if it was advertised on the forum more it would be quite an active place.

I used to go on it a bit but I found that no-one else did. We should have an IRC-awareness thing

I know - we should all change our profile pic to something completely irrelevant to raise awareness of IRC!

(Starting to think I've been on Facebook too long. *sigh*)

Seriously though, good idea. I'll bung it at Ben, see if we can get it featured somewhere.

I think chat rooms work best when they are positioned at the foot of the page for example rather than having to open a new window or something. That way you get a more casual feel to the chat room. I fear if you have to go look for it a lot of people will only go there when they need something where as if it were a the bottom of the main page or better still at the bottom of every page then its always there for members to glance at and therefore easier to dip in and out of.

Thanks renaissance-design really need backing from mods like you for this to work out.

This is also a good idea, keeps members actually on the forum whilst the chat takes place.

The idea of having a chat-room or shoutbox has been floating around for a while, but last I heard the bandwidth would go crazy with that sort of feature. It would be cool if we had a list of all members currently in the IRC at the bottom of the page, but I'm not sure if that's possible

Why dont we all just start using that channel that was mentioned earlier again?

I would love to get back into a proper IRC community :)

EDIT: Its refusing me access to that channel in mIRC :(

H'mmm. Been thinking about this a lot. I think what needs to happen for it to work is:

  • It needs to be publicised on the site more - that's up to Ben.
  • We need mods & Ben to add their registered nicks to their WDF profiles, and a bot that ops them when they enter (not that this is needed at the moment, but if it ever filled up again...)

More prominence on the front page and a link that leads to a web based version of an irc client.
I'm in!

Edit: Also a beginners guide to irc would be good for noobs.

Actually, what do people recommend as the best irc client? I've always used the web based freenode client but it's a bit... rubbish.

Scrap that, i just remembered i've got mIRC installed still.

We could easily setup an unofficial channel on http://webchat.quakenet.org/ and then, if it gets popular and approved by the almighty Ben, get it embedded on a WDF page.

Yeah i agree that a more integrated solution would more likely drive better quality and more traffic to a chat. Currently i think it's just me and Chris sitting on freenode, total sausage fest. :p
