Hi guys,

new here.

So this may sound stupid but... I have a eCommerce site which was made by my web designer a whle back. I now cannot get hold of him and i want to learn to edit the main page myself.

So ive downloaded all the files of my site via FTP and for the living life of me i cannot find which file is used for the main page????

With HTML it is so easy as you find the INDEX.HTML file. But with this it is something else and its driving me insane.

Anyone please point me in the right direction as to which file i am to edit? and what editing tool is best? can i use web expression?

Thanks

Well it depends on what platform you are using.

Much of the time it'll be PHP so look for index.php however most e-commerce (Or any PHP Site really) is built with a structure that moves different elements of the page out to their own files then just pulls them in as needed. So all of the actual code could be located in header.php/menu.php/footer.php and the like.

Keep in mind too that you won't really be able to edit it successfully unless you are running a duplicate of the database/server OR are editing the live pages (Really bad idea). In almost all eCommerce systems the content comes from the database, it's not stored inside the files that you've downloaded so without it you are just changing around empty boxes.

What's the URL for the site? That would probably help us work it out easier.

That's easy then - you need to log in at yourdomain.com/admin and look at the CMS menu in the dashboard.

Without the login details it will be pretty much impossible to edit the site and leave it in a workable condition.

This may help you reset it.

Drop me a message through my site (link in sig) with your Godaddy logins - I'll need to log into your Godaddy control panel and reset your Magento password directly in the database.

Edit: it'll cost you a beer. Link for that is also in my sig.

Appriciate your offer of help which i will take you up on that. However first of all, i assume my original web designer will know my login details. I have tried to call him numerous times without success. I will drop him an email now, if he didnt respond in a day i will take you up on your kind offer to help out.

Might stick around these forums more often seems very helpful :)
