Yeah I looking for something free really and need pointing in the right direction. The website is for a childrens day nursery so will need a staff and parents area so none of the content is that private.

The likes of phpbb (forum builders) definitely allow this type of access because I use it myself.

Yeah the problem is that I have the website already designed so I do not want to start all over again with a cms, I have a site which uses phpbb and although it is good I am not looking for a forum. I have just tried a free program called Deadlock, the problem with it was it only has one protected area.
I just think that there are so many websites out there that have login areas that there must be a free system or script around somewhere.

Do they require individual usernames and passwords or just something blanket per group?

Hi, they need individual usernames and passwords. As I say I will have 2 seperate areas one for parents and 1 for staff, but would prefer to have individual usernames and passwords so that we can make sure ex employees or parents of children who have left are unable to log on.

You wouldn't want a parent registering as staff and finding out their kid was being described as a spawny, little snot gobbler.

That sounds exactly like what I am after but, I would not know where to start. I have just tried installing another peice of software called membersgear and Iam just getting fatal errors galore. I have been trying for over a week just to add a simple log on to my site.

Usernames and passwords are a very poor solution. OpenID/OAuth is faster, secure, more trustworthy, easy to implement, etc. It has lots of benefits.
