so what do you guys think about a fixed menu? or what is the standard thinking about them these days?
im thinking about dumping my current menu for one.
here is my current menu:
http://www.georgianwines.ie

moreover, id like to improve the dropdown function too. i suppose something like this:
http://www.skialpine.com/ which is also fixed to the very top is a good representation of what Im after.
Id like to hear your thoughts though.
many thanks.

To be honest I don't think the navigation needs to be fixed. If you get rid of that massive gap after the footer then there will be barely any scrolling at all.

well this is the the problem. im actually stretching the background images out a bit as we speak because of space issues. some of the text is already cluttered (on product pages etc ) and I dont have any room to work with.

For many years one of my sites had a fixed horizontal dropdown menu at the top of the page and it worked well. However, the page was set at 770px wide for the 800*600 resolution common a few years ago and I found that I couldn't add any more top level tabs in that rather short width, so I've now redesigned the page with a fixed left sidebar 160px wide and the remainder fluid up to 1000px to suit a 1024*768 resolution with a margin-left: 160px and that gives me the opportunity to add a few more menu links vertically. It makes good use of the 1000px width and the left sidebar menu is fixed.
