Hey guys,

I am really confused about a sites google serp.

The term is 'new vauxhall astra' and this is the result on my missus' non signed in google...
http://postimage.org...8k4ip78kb/full/ (yay the first result after the ads!)

Yet, on my work pc (where I am signed in) its like last result on the first page...

I want to be excited about a "job well done", but cant because I cant tell what the best result is...

I am really confused. Could anybody shed some light on this for me please.

Thanks

edit:
yesterday my site (newvauxhallastra.co.uk) was in fourth on that result and today its first, yet on a signed in google - it remains in the same position (last, first page) without moving at all...

MEGA CONFUSED lol

Personalized search. Have you turned it off in your profile?

i looked but couldnt see the options.

So, what will the general google user see do think? The good rank, or the not so good rank? From an SEO point of view, this is going to be a difficult thing to get our heads around imo, because results can be so fluid.

Here.

The general google user will see something we can't predict because it depends on their search history. As a rule of thumb, the sites that perform the best for you with personalization switched off will probably perform the best for the user.

Different people will nearly always see different results, not just from personal search.

Are you accessing google.com, google.co.uk?
Are you using search filters
Are you using date filtering?

...just those combos could mean a thousands different sets of results

Hey I just noticed chris we are both in the same town in south wales! :D

Anyway, I digress. This really changes the whole concept of google ranks as SEO folk really doesnt it?

Example:
I go to client A and tell them that their 'x product' ranks in y position for 'x search term'. The results we as an SEO company gather, will more than likely be different than what Client A sees..

How do we uniform to clients? What is the future of this? Naturally we learn and adopt, but I always worry at the early stages.

Not really, if you do it right. In terms of personalised search when a user is logged in, then that is something that is out of my control. Also, when you're signed into a Google Account, it logs how many times yo click on a site and places that the highest as it appears to be most important and useful to you. However, if the website is that important to them, then they'd go straight to that URL.

When people search, they're looking for a new website in a new niche

The results you're getting when you're not signed in is the most uniform and accurate. If you really want to be sure, then use rank-tracking software.

Sure, there will be times when you're not ranking highly on someone's search results because they are signed in and clicked on your competitors links time and time again. But, build a strong and powerful website, and have it ranking for your keyword in a controlled environment and 99.9 % of the time, that is what the user will see.

Cheers for that info Jason. So i can feel pretty happy about the 1st rank? +1'ed

If anybody would be kind enough to test it, and report back to here what position you see it, as a non signed in user I would be very grateful. The site is http://newvauxhallastra.co.uk/ for me at work it ranks 7th for 'new vauxhall astra' (minus the image results).

On my missus's computer at home (she doesnt have a google account) it ranks 1st for the aforementioned term.

Thanks

Well I just searched using HMA free and you;re 8th - so yes, it's pretty good.

Could defo improve the quality of your backlinks though, as you seem to have a tiny web link exchange circle going on - I noticed several very low quality blogs you seem to use to get a backlink.

You'd need to totally clwear your cookies too, as Google does leave one on your computer even when you're logged out.

Normally caused by signing into Google, golden rule of thumb use another browser for checking rank what you don't normally use.

I use Internet Explorer

It's also worth mentioning results can vary depending on ISP used as well, for example take virgin media for example, a ISP address may have adsj211.bourne.virginmedia.com if you notice the bourne, this indicates that I'm using a ISP in Bournemouth, Google has been known to filter results based on area of location, not just country.
