I am happy enough with my html, css and JS for the minute, obviously it can be improved but I would like to turn to other languages now. I want to get to grips with php and mysql. I am going to order the php, mysql and javascript book from o'reilly, but I wanted to know if anybody knows of any other good / better reading material or online tutorials.

I want to try and get into developing some dynamic sites, that may have the likes classified advertising, so I want to be able to learn, how a user can submit and ad and it be displayed on the site etc. Like gumtree basically. I have been approached by some potential clients that all require something similar, so I wanted to get some knowledge in, and some practice so maybe I can get some work with them.

Thanks in advance :)

You're going to want to learn the basics. Start from websites like tizag/w3schools. Finish their quizzes or whatever. Once you've understood basics, e.g variables, arrays, database integration and how to use native functions. I'd personally suggest you jump into a framework. Something like Codeigniter.

Some people may say it'll take you a year or so to understand PHP, but with a framework such as codeigniter you're going to learn way faster.

I am hoping to learn it pretty quick, I come from a strong java background, and from what I have seen so far, the basics, loops etc have only a slightly different syntax. Hopefully it wont take too long to get to grips with.

I am looking at a tutorial at the minute on freewebmasterhelp.com, seems quite good so far.
