Freebies on your site (nothing major but enough to entice).

You have no idea just how old that statement makes me feel!
A quick trawl of Google(praise be for it knows all) coughs up over a dozen websites in the immediate area all in dire need of a makeover &&|| new features so banging off an email to the webmaster or better still donning a clean shirt and actually going around to see them may yield results.
A little face 2 face market research could also go a long way towards raising awareness of your service amongst traders and other small business owners, hereford being ideal as many are all under one roof;) Speaking of market research the 'Butter market' has a website that appears to have stalled during construction so might be worth some delicate approaches to see what the story is there.

Personally I'd start with Adwords or similar and ensure you're linked from your clients sites and a little 'scouting' for work is always good and as Sogo puts it be gentle ... telling someone their website sucks is always a delicate point to make. Start local and make sure everything you do is top draw. You'll take a little hit on time which clients won't always want to pay for but remember turning out a top ranking site will always bring in more work and makes for a great portfolio.
Quite frankly the 'free' social media as an advertising path is limited IMO, paid is different. A lot of people think it's the new free way to bypass good content and onsite seo. I get clients all the time wanting me to make custom facebook / twitter / linkedin / digg junk and I always ask 'to what end'? I'm not saying it doesn't work but it's down to what the business provides; where does it stop? Follow your local Funeral Home on facebook to see if they got special offers?
OG data is good for sharing links through social media as it makes anyone linking your site on facebook etc look pretty. As for blogs they are a lot of effort to keep up-to-date and writing stuff that people actually want to read is harder still. I think a good 40% of blogs now are slogs, filling the web with bull content for a few cheap backlinks ... I wish Google would open a black hole and push all the spammers down it with a large stick and thus reducing the internet by probably 80%!
